O Custom Volkswagen foi um dos primeiros diecast lançados na linha Hot Wheels original de 1968. Desenhado por Ira Gilford e Harry Bradley, foi totalmente aseado no popular "besouro" Volkswagen (Beetle). Ao contrário do carro original carro com motor traseiro, para a versão Hot Wheels foi instalado um motor V-8 no porta-malas dianteiro
No ano do lançamento foram fabricados modelos em Hong Kong e no EUA. Os modelos produzidos nas terras do Tio Sam, possuiam janelas transparentes, motor de metal, parte do volante do interior moldado, faróis dianteiros pintados, para-brisas grande e menos detalhes na base. Interior branco é padrãol, mas podem ser encontrados em interior escuro. A versão asiática é bastante diferente de irmã norte-americana. Os vidros foram pintado de azul, motor de plástico, volante preto (preso no interior), quatro furos na base e detalhes de suspensão. Interiores: Branco, Lt. Brown, Dk. Marrom. Na versão de Hong Kong existia a opção de modelos com e sem teto-solar
No ano de 1968 foram produzidos 18 variantes de cores e modelos nas versões fabricadas nos EUA e 17 variações nas versões produzidas em Hong Kong. Em 2005 o Custom Volkswagen foi relançado com modelos fabricados na China e Tailândia, somando mais 7 versões (até 2019)

The Custom Volkswagen was one of the first diecasts launched in the original 1968 Hot Wheels line. Designed by Ira Gilford and Harry Bradley, it was fully housed in the popular Volkswagen "beetle" (Beetle). Unlike the original car with a rear engine, for the Hot Wheels version a V-8 engine was installed in the front trunk. In the year of launch, models were manufactured in Hong Kong and the USA. The models produced in the land of Uncle Sam, had transparent windows, metal engine, molded interior steering wheel part, painted headlights, large windshield and less details on the base. White interior is standard, but can be found in dark interior. The Asian version is quite different from the North American sister. The windows were painted blue, plastic engine, black steering wheel (stuck inside), four holes in the base and suspension details. Interiors: White, Lt. Brown, Dk. Brown. In the Hong Kong version there was the option of models with and without sunroof. In 1968, 18 color variants and models were produced in the versions manufactured in the USA and 17 variations in the versions produced in Hong Kong. In 2005 the Custom Volkswagen was relaunched with models manufactured in China and Thailand, adding 7 more versions (until 2019)
